DIY: Safely Remove Eyelash Extensions at Home Without Risk

If you’re one of the millions of people who wear eyelash extensions, you know how good they make you feel and that long, voluminous lashes are the perfect finishing touch to any make-up look. But if you’ve ever worn eyelash extensions, you know what it’s like: at some point, they don’t look as beautiful as they did on the first day. Usually an eyelash has twisted or is crooked and has to be replaced or removed. Or the lash line has become patchy, in which case the whole set has to come off. Here you can find out everything about removing lashes with step-by-step instructions:

Ideally, your lash stylist will take care of the professional removal of the extensions. Here you can see how the professionals remove eyelashes:
But you don’t always have the opportunity to run to the eyelash studio or you’re on holiday.

Then you’re glad if you can help yourself. We show you how you can remove one or more eyelashes yourself at home without risk.

1. What accessories are needed for the removal of eyelash extensions?

Once you wear eyelash extensions for the first time, you should be prepared to remove them after a while if they don’t fall off by themselves.

You know that lash extensions last about 5-8 weeks. In the last phase, when they have grown out, they often don’t look as beautiful as they did in the beginning. Then it is time to remove them. For this you need:

When buying eyelash extension remover, make sure it has a gel-like consistency. A gel adheres better than a liquid that runs off. This means that the gel will stay on the area to be removed, whereas a liquid remover can run into the eye. Ouch!! that burns…

If this happens to you, the only thing that helps is to rinse properly with water.

In order to avoid this, you need a GEL remover. I find the remover minis that I recommend particularly practical because they are disposable and you don’t have to keep a whole bottle in stock. This is ideal in your luggage when travelling.

In the next two steps, I will explain how to remove a single eyelash extension and a whole set of eyelash extensions. The procedure is different:

2. Remove a single eyelash extension

    • Prepare a drop of remover on a suitable surface or the edge of the washbasin.
    • Then select the lash to be removed with the tweezers and “flip” it upwards onto the eyelid. Hold it there with a toothpick or microbrush.
    • With the other hand, dab a microbrush into the prepared drop. A cotton swab would be unsuitable here because it is not fine enough and absorbs too much of the liquid.
    • Now apply the remover drop carefully and precisely to the adhesive area of the extension. It is not a problem if the remover touches the skin of the eyelid. This does not cause any discomfort. It only becomes a problem if the liquid gets on the conjunctiva, on the waterline or in the eye. This stings.
  • The remover must now work for a few minutes. The gel fluid keeps the selected eyelash well attached to the eyelid.
  • After about 3-5 minutes, the extension will detach itself from the natural lash.
  • Finally, you can clean the eyelid with a cotton pad and some water.
  • That’s it.Remove single lash extension without remover

3. Remove single lash extension without remover

    • Professionals have mastered a technique to remove individual lashes without a remover. To do this, hold the natural lash with the tweezers while using a second pair of tweezers to “pull off” the extension, almost like from a tape. This works very well if the glue is already old and brittle.
  • You can see exactly how it works here:
  • However, this method is hardly feasible at home, because you can quickly tear out a natural eyelash this way. That’s why I don’t recommend it here, but I wanted to mention it.

4. Remove a whole set of eyelash extensions

Removing an entire set of lash extensions is a slightly more challenging task. It’s definitely better to have a professional do it. However, if you find yourself in a situation where you need to help yourself, this is how to do it:

    • You will need more remover, prepare a pea-sized portion on a suitable surface or the edge of the sink.
    • Use a microbrush (not a cotton bud) to pick up some remover and gently dab it onto the base of the lashes along the entire length of the glue line. It is best to use a magnifying mirror so that you can see exactly where the glue
    • This section is very tricky as no remover should get on the waterline or in the eye. So be very careful that none of it gets into your eye and burns. The gel consistency really comes into its own here. The gel does not just flow into the eye, but stays where it is applied, unlike liquid remover.
  • After about 5 minutes, you can check whether anything has come off. To do this, flip the first individual eyelash up onto the eyelid and check whether the extension can be removed with the microbrush. Use this method to remove the remaining extensions.
  • If not all extensions come off easily, don’t worry – just keep waiting until the remover has loosen all extensions by itself. Repeat this process until you have removed all the extensions.
  • This section requires a little patience and flair, as you don’t want to tear out your natural lashes along with the extensions. Du merkst, die Aufgabe ist nicht ganz einfach, ich hoffe, die Erklärung hilft.

As you can see, it’s not an easy task, so I hope the explanation helps.

5. Never remove eyelash extensions with oil or other home remedies

Some advisors come up with the idea of using oil, steam or other home remedies. Don’t do it! Some lash adhesives are oil-resistant, so you would only pluck out your lashes instead of getting rid of the extensions.

Steam is completely pointless and needs no explanation.

6. Care after removing eyelash extensions

  • To cleanse your natural lashes and eyelid of residue, use micellar water or gentle eyelash shampoo, applied with a specially designed cleansing brush and lathered.
  • After cleansing, you can apply a serum to strengthen and care for your natural lashes. Not every serum is really effective. That’s why I recommend the XXL Lashes eyelash serum, which accelerates the natural growth of the eyelashes. You will notice lengthened, thickened and strengthened lashes after only about 4 weeks.

Removing eyelash extensions doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming – you can do it at home with a few simple tools. By following these simple steps, you can safely and quickly remove your eyelash extensions without the need for professional help.
